What to Pack when Traveling with Baby
Traveling with a baby can be an enjoyable experience for all involved, but packing can be a nightmare! Try these tips to make packing for baby easier.
The first part of traveling with a baby you need to understand is that you WILL have to pack A LOT. Don't start out thinking you can make it with just one extra bag. You will need plenty of "stuff" so prepare yourself for a lot of luggage. If you are traveling by car, make sure you will have enough room for all of your items. If you plan to travel by airplane, come to grips with the fact that you will be checking bags, and taking the allowed carry-ons.
When packing your baby's wardrobe, keep in mind how frequently babies create accidents that require a change of clothes. If your destination does not have laundry facilities, a good rule of thumb is to bring three outfits for each day you will be gone. Also pack several simple sleepers which are easy to throw into a diaper bag. If your baby is not walking yet, don't bother packing shoes. That is just one more item to try and keep up with. Also pack plenty of bibs, washcloths, extra socks, hats, sleep gowns, and, of course, wipes and diapers. You may wish to pack just enough wipes and diapers to get you to your destination, and then purchase additional items once there. That will save you a little room when packing. Don't forget laundry detergent if you plan to do laundry on your trip.
Besides your baby's wardrobe, you will also need to pack several toys (these sometimes fall victim to accidents as well!), baby soap and shampoo, a thermometer, infant's Tylenol and any other needed medications, a grooming kit, diaper rash cream, lotion, and bedtime books to read. Having items that remind baby of home can make traveling easier.
Next you will need to consider feeding items. If your baby is eating just breastmilk or formula, you will need to bring along bottles, a bottle brush, dish soap for washing bottles, liners if you use them, steam sterilizing bags for nipple cleaning if desired, breast pump equipment, and a cooler for expressed breast milk if needed. If your baby is on solids don't forget containers, spoons, snacks, and food. You can always purchase snacks and foods once at your destination to conserve space.
You may already be thinking that you'll need a ton of space to haul all of this baby equipment, however there is more to come! Next on your packing list are the really big items. These include the stroller, jogging stroller, baby backpack or front carrier, pack 'n play or other travel bed system, diaper bag, and nursing pillow. If you are traveling by plane and using a car once at your destination, you may also need to pack your car seat. These items alone can easily take up an entire car trunk.
When packing for your baby, bring as much as you have space for. While it may be better to pack light for yourself, when packing for an infant, more really is more. The more familiar items from home you have, the easier the trip will be for both you and baby. Traveling with a baby can be fun for everyone involved. Follow these tips to get started packing and before you know it, you will have created some wonderful travel memories with your child.
