Wintergreen Resort, Virginia: A Weekend Retreat for Solo Travelers

If you're traveling solo, Wintergreen, Virginia, is a perfect location for a weekend getaway. Whether you want to have a quiet weekend or you want to participate in the many activities available at this mountain resort, Wintergreen is the place to be.

Before Wintergreen

There's plenty of food and drink on the mountain, but before heading up to Wintergreen, why not begin your weekend retreat by stopping at a couple of my favorite spots: Blue Mountain Brewery and Wintergreen Winery?

Blue Mountain Brewery
9519 Critzers Shop Road, Afton, VA 22920
540-456-8020
Open seven days a week
Monday-Saturday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Sunday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Blue Mountain Brewery has been a huge success since its opening in 2020. About 20 seasonal, as well as other select mainstay beers, are produced each year. They are available at the brewery restaurant and other bars and restaurants across Virginia.

Sit inside or at the brewery restaurant's newly expanded outdoor patio, which overlooks the Blue Ridge Mountains. Here, you can enjoy excellent beer, delicious food, and magnificent scenery. Entertainment and special events are scheduled throughout the year.

Some of the popular beers are available in six-packs, so you can take some with you to Wintergreen.

Wintergreen Winery
462 Winery Lane, Nellysford, VA 22958
434-361-2519
Open seven days a week
April-October, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
November-March, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Wintergreen Winery, a family-owned business, is located in Nelson County, Virginia. Surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains and situated alongside Rockfish River, this is a quiet and beautiful place to spend part of your day. Although a small and understated winery, it regularly wins awards for its simple, but flavorful wines. You're sure to find a white, red, or fruit wine you want to take with you to Wintergreen.

Before you leave, visit the gift shop, where you'll find a selection of wine-related items, as well as a variety of specialty cooking sauces, oils, and jams. If you have enough time, buy one of their chilled bottles of wine and some cheese and crackers for an onsite picnic.

Things to Do at Wintergreen

Wintergreen Resort
Route 664, Wintergreen, VA 22958
434-325-8003

Wintergreen Resort has something for everyone.

Do you like to hike? There are 30 miles of hiking trails at varying levels of difficulty. Guided hikes are offered by the Wintergreen Nature Foundation on Saturdays and during the summer on Wednesdays. Trail maps are available at the main lodge.

How about shopping? You may be in the mountains, away from the hustle and bustle of the city, but you still have plenty of shopping opportunities. These specialty shops, located at the main lodge, are open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

If you want to stay in shape during your getaway weekend, stop by the Aquatics and Fitness Center. The Center has outdoor pools and an indoor pool, a fitness room, hot tubs, steam and sauna rooms, and scheduled fitness classes. You can also arrange down time at The Spa, where you can get a variety of services, such as massages, body wraps, and skin care treatments. Check with the Fitness Center at 434-325-8280 for non-member rates. For spa appointments, call 434-325-8562.

There are two tennis facilities at Wintergreen: Devils Knob and Stoney Creek. Devils Knob has 15 outdoor courts and three Deco-Turf indoor courts. Stoney Creek has four outdoor courts. Call 434-325-8235 for reservations.

If you're looking for an uplifting experience on the golf course, why not spend some time on Virginia's highest golf course, Devils Knob Golf Course. This 3850-foot-high course is open mid-April through October. Call 434-325-8250 for tee times.

Places to Eat at Wintergreen

Two of my favorite restaurants at Wintergreen are The Edge and The Copper Mine Bistro.

The Edge
Wintergreen Resort
Route 664, Wintergreen, VA 22958
800-266-2444
Open daily for lunch, 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Open Friday-Sunday for dinner, 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m.

For casual fare and atmosphere, The Edge is the place to go. Overlooking the mountains and slopes, this is the perfect place to relax and drink in the beauty of your surroundings. The menu includes sandwiches, burgers, and entrees that focus on regional Southern dishes.

The Copper Mine Bistro
Wintergreen Resort
Route 664, Wintergreen, VA 22958
434-325-8090
Open for breakfast Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.; Saturday-Sunday, 7 a.m. to 11 a.m.
Open for dinner Monday-Thursday, 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.; Friday-Saturday, 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
Closed on Sunday

The Copper Mine Bistro is a more upscale restaurant that serves breakfast, a Mediterranean-style dinner, and lunch during ski season. Less casual attire, particularly at dinner, is expected, but not required.

Places to Stay at Wintergreen

Wintergreen Accommodations
Wintergreen Resort
800-266-2444

What could be more relaxing than experiencing the beauty of Wintergreen, with its panoramic mountain views and incredible sunsets, all from your own private balcony? Wintergreen offers accommodations ranging from single-room studio condominiums to spacious nine-bedroom mountain homes. My favorite condominiums are located along the mountainside at Devils Knob. From here, you have a spectacular view of the entire resort area. These condominiums are centrally located to resort amenities and restaurants, and the tennis and golf clubs are within easy walking distance.

Special Events at Wintergreen

Wintergreen Resort schedules several special events throughout the year, such as a Mother's and Father's Day celebration, special hiking events, wildflower symposiums, wine festivals, a Fourth of July Jubilee, and much more. Check Wintergreen's calendar for their upcoming events.
