WDW's Coronado Springs Resort
I scoured over website after website, trying to discover what would be the best resort at Disneyworld, in Orlando, to spend our 10th anniversary and vacation in October 2020. There are a lot of opinions out there!
The moment we pulled thru the gates I was enchanted by the Southwestern theme. It truly gives you the feeling that you have stepped out of Florida and travelled south of the border. Lush foliage, stucco buildings and terra cotta roofs added to the ambiance.
We were greeted warmly by cast members and directed to the check in area, which was fairly quiet for a Saturday afternoon. At the check-in we were greeted with a smile and "we've been waiting for you!" Talk about making us feel welcomed! My husband was in a wheelchair for this trip, which was of great concern to us. I had read about the sprawling property but was hopeful for a room in either the Casitas or Cabanas, both of which are near the main building. You could have heard my heart hit the floor when we were told we were back in the Ranchos. Ah well, suck it up and make the best of it, right? We had already decided that we would take whatever they gave us and not ask for a room change no matter what, and we stuck to that. I'm glad that we did!
A wonderful cast member, named Ray, led us to a cart, loaded on our baggage and we set off to the far reaches of the Ranchos. On the way he gave us a mini guided tour, showing us Lago Dorado (Lake of Gold), the pools, health club, hair salon, and the different villages that make up the massive property. Once we got to our room he helped us in and told us to call if we ever needed a ride to the front again. I was sure I would be calling them constantly since we were light years away from the main building!
Our room was a King room with handicap access. It was large, spotlessly clean, and other than the confusing pattern on the bedspread, was very pleasing to the eye. (Just don't stare at the bedspread too long or you may get hypnotized!)
We were quite happy with our room. After all, let's face it. How much time were we actually going to spend in there? It's a place to crash after running around in the parks all day, right?
Ray had given us a resort map and we were ecstatic to learn that there was a Designated Smoking Area right outside our building, just a few feet away! Like two kids who had found a pot of gold we gleefully had our first smoke, my husband from the comfort of his wheelchair and me, on one of the two benches. It was so quiet and serene. Little lizards pattering everywhere, birds singing, a rabbit hunting for food and stopping to look at us (I'm convinced he wanted to bum a cigarette from us). We took in the sight of the beautiful ranchos buildings. They're pueblo-style with desert landscaping. Who said this resort isn't well themed?
After unpacking we were getting hungry. The Pepper market is located way up in the main building (oh horrors!) I really didn't want to bother guest services by bumming a ride so I decided to see just how good my muscles were and off we went. Honestly, the walk isn't bad at all (and I could use the exercise anyway!) We passed by the Lost City Of Cibola pool, which is the resort's main pool, meandered by Lago Dorado and before we knew it we were at the main building. It was a pleasant walk indeed!
The Pepper Market gets a lot of bad raps. It's a food court style restaurant. Each station serves a different type of food. They have a Mexican kitchen, Grill station, Wok kitchen, Pizza kitchen, Pasta kitchen, deli station....there's something for everyone! You are given a card when you come in and seated, then you go to a station, order your food, get your card marked, get your food and go chow down. In the meantime the wait staff brings your drinks and, we found, that they were all friendly and chatty despite the fact that it was busy. One thing that many visitors take issue with is the fact that they tack on a 10% surcharge if you are eating in. It didn't bother us one bit. The wait staff was very attentive, the food was awesome and we enjoyed our meal. What's a measly 10%? You can also get your food to go and eat at one of the many tables situated by Lago Dorado.
We did that several times, for breakfast, not to save pennies but because it was so pleasant to dine in that setting. We never tried the resort's sit down restaurant "Maya Grill" because we enjoyed the Pepper market so much. Cafe Rix is another option. They have wonderful sandwiches, drinks, desserts and pastries that you can grab and go.
The Laguna Bar is a wonderful outdoor option for a relaxing drink by the lake. Keep your eyes open for the turtles and resident baby gator that are always swimming around, hoping for a tidbit!
I enjoyed shopping (several times, much to my husband's dismay) at Panchito's Gifts and Sundries. It's a small store but has a wide variety of Disney goods as well as snacks, drinks and all those things you forgot to pack (read: nail clippers).
During our stay we used the main pool several times. It has a spa (hot tub) located right next to it, which my husband thoroughly enjoyed, a sandy volleyball set up, a snack bar and a poolside bar, Siestas. I admit to feeling totally spoiled, lying out in the sun with a lovely beverage by the pool! We also used the "quiet pool" located near our room. Hey, it really was quiet! Most of the time we were the only ones in it!
With all there is to see and do at Coronado Springs it was like we had two vacations rolled into one. Once we left the parks we entered into another world. By the end of our trip all my reservations about the resort were gone and since I had walked many, many times from our room to the main building, I was now in better shape! It's a wonderful resort for adults without children. It's not cold and impersonal. Quite the opposite! It's warm, welcoming, and there's plenty to do!
As we flew home we started planning our next trip to WDW, but this time we're making a room request. We want a room in the Ranchos at Coronado Springs!
