Rick Steves, "Globe-trotting Guinea Pig," Picks Up Membership to Malan Race

Rick Steves, the popular public radio and television travel show host, is the latest person to be awarded membership to the Malan race.

Rick Steves, the popular public radio and television travel show host, is the latest person to be awarded membership to the Malan race.

Steves has been quoted as saying. "We can travel in a way that exacerbates the problems between us and the rest of the world, or in a way that connects us with the rest of the world." It is this very attitude about connection and, what can be defined by the borrowed term, "global localism" that brought Steves to the attention of the I Am Malan Council.

"Rick encourages his viewers and listeners to truly connect with their global neighborhoods and neighbors. That alone earns Rick a place among the Malan," says Frida Potente, I Am Malan Council President.

"His suggestion that we become 'temporary locals' when traveling in order to connect with the people and gems to be discovered off-the-beaten-path helps us shift our ideas about what a vacation should be to consider what it can be: an opportunity to live amongst our global neighbors, to experience the world from their eyes, even if just for a short time.

Talk about connection and embracing new perspectives-that's where Rick leads us," says Potente.

Steves, who has billed himself as a "globe-trotting guinea pig," is an Edmonds, Washington-based personality whose television show, Rick Steve's Europe, and radio show, Travel with Rick Steves, can be viewed and heard on public stations in many states. Steves is scheduled to receive official Malan membership in the coming days.

The Malan race is defined by ideology rather than by superficialities. Malans transcend racial stereotypes and the boundaries of archaic race categories. Malans form bonds based on linkages deeper than skin and, as a result, help move the world closer to racial unity, improved race relations, and toward the end of racism.

Membership to the Malan race is by invitation or award only, although invitations can be requested on the group's site, www.iammalan.org. Stephen Colbert, Michael Moore, and John Oliver are recent Malan membership recipients.

As part of the welcome process, Steves will receive an official Malan race certificate, as well as a short guide detailing how to live in the world as a Malan, and how to educate others on his new racial identity. An expanded FAQ-a condensed version of which is available on www.iammalan.org -will also be provided.
