How to Use a Monopod
A monopod is invaluable for taking photos in tight spaces in low light and/or where flash is not an option. Learning how best to use a monopod takes a willingness to experiment.
I use a monopod to stabilize my pocket and advanced compact digital cameras when a tripod is impractical. These situations include shooting in dark, low - light places and where flash is not allowed or distance makes a flash ineffective. While a monopod may not steady my camera as well as a tripod, I have used it in low - light situations to get sharper, well - exposed photos that would not have been possible if I had had to rely on handholding my camera. So, using a monopod and a camera set at a shutter speed of 1/30th or 1/15th of second has yielded good shots for me, especially if the camera I used had a good image stabilization system. Learn to hold the monopod rock steady and you can get good results at these shutter speeds even if your camera doesn't have an image stabilization system.
Use a Quick - Release Plate
If you do not already have one, get a quick - release plate-also called a fast - coupling plate-to use with your monopod or tripod. This is a handy, inter - locking accessory in two parts. One part screws into the camera's monopod/tripod socket and the other into the top of the monopod. By using it, you can quickly remove and re - attach the camera to the monopod. Eliminated is the need to screw and unscrew the camera to the support many times. This cuts the risk of dropping the camera and also allows you to work faster.
Make sure the monopod will support the weight of your camera. Find out the maximum weight-and don't forget to add in the weight of the interchangeable lens you will be using, if applicable-the manufacturer says the monopod will support.
There is no right way to use a monopod. Whatever method gives you the best camera stability and the best comfort level is the one to use. Photographers should practice different stances. Here are two to try
that I use interchangeably. These instructions are for people who are right - handed so left - handers should reverse the positions. But regardless of whether you are left - or right - handed, remember that the object is to figure out the best position for placing the monopod on the surface and the best position for you to stand to ensure that the tripod remains as motionless as possible.
Preparing to Position the Monopod
Always begin by extending the monopod to the height you will be using. Make sure to lock its legs. Attach the camera to the monopod using a quick - release plate. Stand as erect as you can.
Start with both feet facing forward and spread apart. Place the bottom of the monopod against your right instep. Move the left foot forward a little to a comfortable position and bend the left knee slightly. Gently push the monopod against the upper left thigh so the it does not move. With the left hand, grasp the top of the monopod just below the base of the camera if the camera is a small one. If the camera is large and/or heavy, grasp the top of the monopod and the base of the camera with your left hand. Move the camera as close to your chest as possible.
If grasping the top of a monopod that has a ballhead, which allows you to pivot the camera to any position, try experimenting in two ways: grasp the ballhead or grasp just below it. Decide which method works best for you.
With both feet facing forward and spread apart slightly, move the left foot forward a little. Put the monopod through your legs so that the bottom is on the surface behind you. Bend the left knee slightly. Rest the monopod on the inside of your upper left thigh and put gentle pressure on the monopod so it does not move. Pull the camera as close to your chest as possible and grab the top of it with your left hand in the manner described in Method 1.
